Photocatalytic Oxidation is a process that utilizes the energy from light (direct sunlight or light from electric lamps) to activate powerful reactions on the surface of a semiconductor photocatalyst. With the presence of oxygen and moisture, activation of the catalyst generates hydroxyl radicals and superoxide ions, powerful oxidizing species which attack and breakdown a variety of organic compounds and harmful contaminants.
